Learn to "burnish gild" with 23K gold leaf in this fun beginning class. Gild a frame and learn the medieval techniques for gilding interior objects such as panel paintings, picture frames, clocks and furniture. This finish is appropriate for sculpture, contemporary furniture and paintings on panel. Students will learn how to make and use rabbit skin glue-based gesso and gilder's clay, apply gold leaf and burnish. "Antiquing" techniques will also be covered. Renaissance decorative techniques such as pastiglia, punch work and "sgraffito" will also be discussed as time allows. All recipes are included as hand outs. One, 10" X 12" gessoed picture frame and one book of 23K gold leaf included in studio fee. Shop tools are available for use in studio and tools and additional gold leaf are also available for purchase. No prerequisite. This workshop takes place at Gold Leaf Restoration, located at 544 S.E. Nancy Thorn, Instructor:
Nancy Thorn, owner of Gold Leaf Restoration, has been a specialty finishing contractor since 1980, with gilding as a specialty. She has worked with internationally recognized sculptors, museums, commercial institutions and private collectors on restoring old and creating new gilded surfaces. Her scope of work spans public and private restorations, including Washington State Capitol's painted and gilded ceiling, gilded architectural elements in the Franklin County Court House, period reproduction frames for museums and private collectors and a line of closed-corner picture frames.
